In order to remove dissolved salts and other contaminants from seawater with a reverse osmosis membrane, extremely high pressures must be generated. Traditionally, powerful motors and large amounts of energy are used to generate the necessary pressures. This is no problem for large vessels that have plenty of power and space to spare but providing this power is a real challenge for individuals using a small-scale system.

The unique technology of Katadyn's patented Energy Recovery System, which was used to develop the first, and only, manual desalinators in the world, has now been adapted to higher output units to provide many with the luxury of fresh water on demand.

Many desalinators create high-pressure reject water that is typically wasted. The Katadyn Energy Recovery system takes advantage of stored energy in the reject water and re-circulates it to the backside of the pump piston to power-assist the next stroke. The system is using the wastewater to push additional 'raw water' through the membrane. Therefore, this stored energy is kept in the system, resulting in less work to create fresh water and a reduction in the battery power needed. A small, efficient, electrically powered pump can now provide all the pressure and volume required.

The optimized solar powered electrical energy generation and storage systems are engineered to allow the Watermaker to be setup and operational within minutes. Rugged stainless steel backed solar panels, AGM storage batteries, solar boost converters and a solid Pelican case combine to make a complete unit of unparalleled convenience and reliability.

The Watermaker can convert salt water and dirty water into fresh drinking water; the system is small, portable, and solar powered and it can be used anywhere in the world.
